Pika 3 Technical Information

System Requirements

The Pika system requires the Apache [http://apache.org] web server software and a MySQL [http://mysql.com] database for data storage. Pika is written in PHP [http://php.net], a powerful web scripting tool.

The Apache/PHP combination is very resource-efficient. The minimum hardware specifications to run the system are a Pentium 300Mhz CPU (or equivalent), 96 MB of RAM and 250MB of extra hard drive space. (Larger offices will require faster hardware.) Note that the MySQL server and the web server do not require a "dedicated" server; both can coexist on a single computer.

Since MySQL, Apache and PHP are all cross-platform software tools, Pika will run on a variety of operating systems, including Linux, other UNIXes, Microsoft Windows 2000 and even the new Mac OS X.

Networking Options

Once Pika is installed on your local network, there are several ways to connect your other offices to the system. If you have a WAN or VPN, it can be used. In lieu of this, Pika can be connected to a high-speed Internet connection, such as a DSL line, which allows access through cheap dialup Internet access. Multiple users can share a single dialup line, lowering costs even further.

Recommended Web Browsers

These web browsers have good support for W3C web standards, and are recommended for use with Pika CMS:

Database Design

The Pika database tables have been properly normalized. Having a normalized database design makes the database take up less space, run faster, makes it easier to keep your data accurate, and provides more flexibility when creating custom reports.
