Zip Code Community Edits
From PikaDocs
This page gives background on zip codes in Pika.
The purpose of the page you are reading is to describe a possible community effort to keep the zip code file update.
For those who are willing, you can download the zip code file, correct the entries for your state, and then re-upload it. New programs coming on board, or anyone wanting an updated file, could grab the latest file.
List of Files
Links should have dates on them and description of what changes made
- version 1: Aaron's file as of October 2005 (http://pikasoftware.net/docs/images/e/e3/Zip_codesv1.zip)
- version 2: Aaron's file with Vermont corrections - October 2005 (http://pikasoftware.net/docs/images/9/95/V2_VT_corrected_zip_codes.zip)
Status of File Editing
There is no mechanism for file locking. If two people make changes at once, we would have to find a way of merging changes.
If you are making changes, edit this page to say in big bold letters: "So and So of Pikaland has the file checked out since such and such day for edits".
When you are done and have uploaded your file, remove that notice and say no one has it checked out.
FILE STATUS: 10/21/2005. FILE IS NOT CHECKED OUT
How to Upload Your Edited File
- Start by reading this.
- What is your file name on your local filesystem? Give a name that has a unique version number, or your initials, or something so that you don't overwrite any of the files that have been uploaded. When you upload it, it will have the same file name as on your local filesystem. By using a unique name for each file we can keep all the old files, so we can still recover things if somebody screws up and uploads a broken file.
- Next you'll need to go to the upload page
Everything says image, but just go with the flow. You'll get a warning about files over 100K. You did zip it, didn't you?
- When the upload is successfull, you'll get a link to the uploaded file. Try to get a link to the actual file location, like this:
http://pikasoftware.net/docs/images/e/e3/Zip_codesv1.zip
- Edit this wiki page that you are reading to update the checked out status, and put a link to your new file.
