HotDocs Reference Path Set-Up Instructions

A HotDocs library will work only if each template listed in the library is located in the exact path specified in the Item Properties dialog box for that template. This makes it difficult to create a library that will work for multiple users who will not store the templates in the same locations. A reference path lets you to create a library that will work, regardless of where users store their templates.

A reference path is a folder path for a template in which the drive letter and some or all of the folder names have been replaced with a caret (^) and a keyword. The keyword is associated with an actual folder path in the user's HotDocs settings. When HotDocs needs to open a template, it replaces the caret and keyword in the folder path for the template with the folder path that is associated with the keyword in the user's HotDocs options.

In order for your library to work for users regardless of where they store the templates, you need to enter a reference path for all templates and clause libraries in the library. You should use the same keyword for all the items in the library.

With the integration of Pika CMS and OhioDR templates developed in HotDocs, a reference path is a way of referencing, in the Welcome Template, a specific folder on a local system where the Ohio DR HotDocs templates are located and the Client Interview template, specifically.

The Welcome Template uses a "OhioDR" reference path, preceded by "^", to reference the Client Interview template as follows:

ASSEMBLE "^OhioDR\Interview.cmp /ov=""Firm.ans"""

The Welcome Template file references an Ohio DR interview template that might be located in different locations on different machines in various program offices. Using a reference path allows each machine to store its Ohio DR templates in a unique folder rather than requiring the name and path to be stored or maintained by Pika or the web utility.

In order for the integration to work properly, each machine must have a reference path entry for "OhioDR" and access to the corresponding folder and Interview.cmp file.

SET-UP INSTRUCTIONS:

Step 1. At the HotDocs library, click the Options button. The HotDocs Options dialog box appears. (Tip: You can also click Options at the Tools menu.)

Step 2. Click the File Locations folder. The window changes to show a listing of the different HotDocs file paths.

Step 3. In the Reference Paths section, click Add. The Add/Edit Reference Path dialog box appears.

Step 4. Type "OhioDR" (exactly as typed here) for the reference path in the Keyword box.

Step 5. Click the Browse button next to the Path box, and specify the path to the subfolder you want to use. (Tip: Browse to the "Templates" subfolder in the "HotDocs" folder where the OhioDR software templates are accessible from the user's PC, which may be a local or network drive folder; you will want to point to the folder where the Interview.cmp file is located. See note below.)

Step 6. Click OK.

NOTE: Depending on the installation of OhioDRSoftware, there may be more than one Interview.cmp file installed on a local or network drive. If more than one county-specific library is installed, then you may either point to the Interview.cmp file located in any one of the county-specific library folders (e.g., …HotDocs\Templates\PUBfrank\) or the general pleadings library folder (e.g., (e.g., …HotDocs\Templates\PUBplead\). While there may be slight difference between various county-specific Interview.cmp files, it is not significant for this purpose.
